Cuban Regime Celebrates Other Dictatorships… in New York

MIAMI, United States – The Cuban regime’s representation in the U.S. and its Venezuelan ally organized and hosted the event “Latin America Speaks: Solidarity vs. Empire” on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at the Apollo Theater in New York.

Among the keynote speakers at the event were Cuba’s Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, and the Venezuelan dictatorship’s Foreign Minister, Yván Gil Pinto, who used the platform to promote their “anti-imperialist” narrative.

During the event, representatives of the Cuban and Venezuelan regimes presented their models of government as alternatives to U.S. policies. According to the organizers, the conference aimed to contrast the “solidarity” of these countries against “coups, invasions, and sanctions,” which they claimed are promoted by Washington.

The event also highlighted an alleged development model based on cooperation and mutual aid that, according to the organizers, is practiced by Cuba and Venezuela. They cited examples such as sending doctors abroad and offering scholarships to the poor in the Global South, but made no mention of the accusations of “modern slavery” surrounding Cuba’s so-called medical missions. “Latin America offers a beacon of hope through solidarity,” the event’s promoters stated in a press release.

The event also featured a special performance by the Cuban children’s group La Colmenita, known for its role in promoting the Cuban regime’s ideology through artistic presentations. In one of the videos from the event, shared by Juan Antonio Fernández Palacios, Director General of Press, Communication, and Image at MINREX, members of La Colmenita can be heard calling for “a shout-out for Palestine.”

On his X social media profile, Rodríguez Parrilla thanked La Colmenita director Tin Cremata for the “noble work that enhances the social mission of the Cuban Revolution.” “The love and vibrant performance of the Cuban children from La Colmenita filled the Apollo Theater in Harlem, packed with friends in solidarity with the just causes of the peoples of the Global South,” the official added.

The event was organized by the U.S.-Cuba Normalization Committee and The People’s Forum, along with other movements that openly support the regimes of Cuba and Venezuela. Its purpose was to strengthen ties between organizations in the U.S. and Latin America that share an anti-imperialist vision. According to the organizers, the funds raised will be donated to the Middle Eastern Children’s Alliance, an organization providing humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Other organizations that supported and participated in the event included the New York-New Jersey Cuba Sí Coalition, the National Network On Cuba, the Canadian Network on Cuba, and the Table de concertation et de solidarité Québec – Cuba.
